BANGLADESH ARMY
Bangladesh army was born during the glorious and heroic war of liberation when they organized resistance against Pakistan Occupation Army alongside the common people of the nation.
The Main role of the Army is to Defend the Integrity and sovereignity of the country, Besides, the army also assists civil administration to restore and maintain law and order situation, when called upon. Army is often called upon in disaster relief operation during any natural calamity and nation building activities.
BANGLADESH NAVY
1. All members of erstwhile East Pakistan Navy joined & fought the war of liberation as freedom fighters. Immediately after the war on 10th December 1972 Bangladesh Navy was founded as a separate military service, with 17 officers, 417 men & 2 patrol crafts. During the war of liberation on 21st November combined forces of Army, Navy & Air forces began war against Pakistan forces.
2. Bangladesh Navy safeguards nation's maritime objective of both economic & military. Besides, Protection of coastline Navy also protects maritime resources of offshore in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Navy is frequently called upon for search, relief & rescue operation during cyclones/ tornadoes in the areas of offshore islands. Navy also assists to prevent smuggling, piracy, drug, trafficking etc.
BANGLADESH AIR FORCE
1. Bangladesh Air Force was born during War of liberation on 14th September 1971 with only few combat & non - combat aircraft. Today BAF inventory has modern aircraft of MIG - 29, BELL helicopters & C - 130 aircrafts.
2. "Banglar Aakash Rakhibo Mukto" is the motto of BAF. The basic role of BAF is to defend the homeland from hostile air attack. BAF's professionalism is now well recognized both at home abroad.
3. BAF is fully prepared to meet any requirement of the nation & ready to undertake any assigned task. During flood, cyclone & in any natural disaster BAF helicopters have been extending fastest help.
DIRECTORATE OF MILITARY LANDS & CANTONMENTS (DML&C)
:: The Military Lands & Cantonments Directorate exercises statutory powers in matters of control & supervision of Cantonment Boards administration as per provisions of Cantonment Act, 1924.
:: This Directorate exercise powers in matters of control & supervision of the Military Estates under provisions of Cantonment Property Rules, 1957.
:: This DML&C controls & supervises the matters of Acquisition, Custodianship & Relinquishment of Military Lands as per CLA Rules, 1937.
:: Budgetary, Administrative & financial control of all Cantonment Boards & all Military Estates Officers in Bangladesh.
:: This DML&C exercises powers the rent controller for all the Cantonments in Bangladesh under powers delegated by the Government.
:: Manages the Abandoned Property in Cantonment area under under P.O.16 of 1972 through a Management Board.
:: Being the Member - Secretary of Defence Officer Housing Scheme the DML&C, supervises the management & maintenance of the scheme.
:: The DML&C Supervises the Educational & Administrative activities of the Cantonment Board schools & Colleges.
:: The DML&C Supervises the civic activities if the Cantonments through the Cantonment Executive Officers.
CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER'S OFFICE (CAO)
Office of the Chief Administrative Officer is a subordinate office of Ministry of Defence. The office is headed by Chief Administrative officer. All the subjects pertaining to employment, promotion, transfer, disciplinary action, retirement, financial benefits etc of Civilian Officers & Employees serving in the Armed Force Headquarters like Army Headquarters, Naval Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, Defence Services Command & staff College, National Defence College, Directorate General of Defence Purchase, Inter - Services Selection Board are under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Defence. Out of the authorised number of civilian personnel come under the control of Ministry of Defence. Secretary, Ministry of Defence exercises his authority upon the above mentioned civilian personnel through Office of the Chief Administrative Officer.
INTER - SERVICE PUBLIC RELATION DIRECTORATE (ISPR)
1) To act as the only agency to plan & execute publicity of the activities of the Ministry on Defence, its attached departments, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force & other Inter - Service offices / organisations with a view to increase their images.
2) To act as spokesman for the Ministry of Defence for the exchange of defence related information.
3) To collect information & take photographs of activities of the armed forces & other inter - service organisations through representatives as well as to arrange their publication and broadcast / telecast in newspapers, radio & television.
4) To publish house journals for the armed forces attached departments / organisations under the Ministry of Defence.
5) To edit & clear write - ups of the armed forces & attached departments / organisations under the Ministry of Defence meant for publication in newspapers as well as broadcast / telecast.
6) To initiate & co - ordinate broadcast / telecast of functions arranged by the armed forces.
7) To arrange production & projection of documentary films for boosting up the morale of the members of the armed forces.
8) To co - ordinate publication of special supplements in news - papers on the armed forces day & other occasions.
9) To co - ordinate radio programme Durbar & weekly news bulletin for the troops.
10) To maintain press - cleeping on the armed forces & put them up to the higher authority.
11) To scan press reports & monitoring reports & issue corrigendum / rejoinder, if required.
12) To initiate psychological warfare on behalf of the armed forces, if need be.
DEPARTMENT OF CYPHER
FUNCTIONS:
1. To evolve Cryptographic & Communication Security Materials & Procedures to give security cover to the state communication.
2. Evolution, production & distribution of Cryptographic Materials / Documents.
3. Ensuring the security of Cyphers & Codes to resists Cryptanalytic attack.
4. Research & development of Cyphers, Codes & Computerised Crypto System.
5. Imparting training in operation of Cyphers to the user.
6. Ensure Physical Security of Cryptographic & Crypto - material in all stages.
7. Issue of technical directives as regards operation & security precautions of all Cryptographic Materials.
8. Ensuring the security of Cypher by inspecting all Cryptocentre Oftenly.
9. Production & modification of Mechanical / Electrical Cypher devices.
10. Administration of the Department.
SURVEY OF BANGLADESH (SOB)
Survey of Bangladesh is the only national mapping organization in the country. This department was established in undivided India in 1767. Its responsibilities are:
Establishment of geodetic control network in Bangladesh; carrying out ground Survey and preparation of topographical base maps of Bangladesh in Any Scale; Transfrontier mapping around Bangladesh; Demarcation of international boundary with Myanmar and Mizoram ( India ); Printing of topographical and political maps; Aerial Survey; its control processing; development; maintenance and custody of foto negatives; Preparation of special maps and providing operational assistance to Bangladesh Army at the time of national emergency
Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD)
The Functions of BMD are:
:: To render technical advice to administrative Ministry as and when required.
:: To observe different Meteorological parameters both for surface and upper air including agrometerology parameters all over Bangladesh.
:: To prepare and analyze all weather charts and to make interpretations on the basis of analyses
:: To provide weather forecasts for the general public, farmers, mariners, aviators, on routine basis and also to issue warnings for severe weather phenomena such as tropical cyclones , tornadoes, nor'westers, heavy rainfall, etc.
:: To maintain surveillance of weather radars for probing impending tropical cyclones, nor'westers and tornados.
:: To exchange Meteorological and agrometeorological data, forecasts and warnings to meet national and international requirements.
:: To receive round the clock imageries for timely use in operational Meteorology.
:: To extract, maintain quality control, process, archive and publish climatic data for use of various interested agencies at home and abroad.
:: To operate and maintain Seismological and Geometric Observatories for taking seismic and geometric observations.
Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO)
Bangladesh Space Research and Remote Sensing Organization (SPARRSO) is a multisectoral reasearch and development organization of the Govt. of Bangladesh under the administrative control of Ministry of Defence. Following are the principal objectives of the organization.
1. Peaceful utilization of space technology in the fields of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, geology, mapping, water resources, landuse, meteorology, oceanography, environment, geography, education, and other fields of sciences.
2. Carry out research and application oriented work for the development and application of the said technology.
3. Help the Govt. in formulating space and technology policy and to provide advisory services and supply information to the Govt. in ensuring the peaceful use of the space technology in the international arena. Necessary research and instrumentation failities have been created in the organization with support from the Govt. of Bangladesh and foreign donors.
Since its inception, SPARRSO has been providing these following services:
a. Natural resources survey and disaster management.
b. Environmental Monitoring
c. Provide informations in forecasting cyclones, floods, etc. in monitoring small and large water bodies for the fisheries department and costal afforestation for Forest Department.
d. Contributing to flood control and drainage project of Bangladesh Water Development Board, Flood action fund, etc.
Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB)
Inter Services Selection Board is established in 1974. ISSB is directly controlled by the Prime Minister's office Armed Foces division for administrative and operational purposes. Its financial aspects are looked after by Ministry of Defece. The mission of ISSB is to select officer cadres for the armed forces of Bangladesh from the field of candidates of acceptable educational, physical and mental standard ( As provided by the Services Headquarters ) for commissioning as officer after necessary training in respective service academies. ISSB can test up to 4200 candidates, both male and female, in a year. The selection proceedure in ISSB is multidimensional where candidates are tested in real situations under varying circumstances, by the specialists drawn from different diciplines/backgrounds. These specialists are the psychologists, group testing officers and deputy presidents. In the selection process of ISSB, the effort is made to select a potential officer who can be easily trained in the defense academics to prepare him as a future leader of the armed forces.
Comptroller General Defence Finance (CGDF)
1. By the order of the finance Division on 27.9.82 the then Military Finance Department was reorganized as Defence Finance Department. Comptroller General Defence Finance is the chief of this department. CGDF directs the defence finance department.

1. SFC (Army) 2. SFC (Navy), 3. SFC (Air), 4. SFC (Works),
5. SFC (DP), 6.SFC (BOF), 7.SFC ( Misc.)
3. Following are the functions:
a. Accounts
b. Internal Audit
c. Providing advice on financial affairs.
d. Establishment and administrative affairs.
Directorate General Medical Services (DGMS)
Comprises of Army Medical Corps (AMC), Army Dental Corps (ADC), and Armed Forces nursing Services (AFNS).
Provides medical service to the following:
1. All members of Armed forces and civil officers and staff salaried from defence head.
2. All cadets, trainees, trainers of collages ( including cadet colleges) academics and centers of armed forces including their family members.
3. All retired members of armed forces, their family members, including members of 'Shahid Paribar'
4. Members of MODC, and Civil Staff of all ranks in BOF including their family members.
5. Civilian candidates appearing at ISSB for commission in the armed forces.
6. Honourable president of the republic, Honourable prime minister, and ex- presidents.
7. All members of BDR and their family members. (Entitled to BDR hospital )
8. All ministers and National level persons.
9. Father, Mother, Father in law, and mother in laws of the armed forces members.
10. Foreign diplomats working in Bangladesh and their families.
11. Life saving emergent primary treatment & victims of accidents
Directorate General Defence Purchase (DGDP)
After independence Directorate General Defence Purchase (DGDP) was recognized on 8th January 1972. This directorate followed some organizaional changes up to 1997. In 1997 the present TO&E is approved by the Govt.
Function:
a. Purchase of Defence materials on the demand of service Headquarters and inter Services Organizations
b. Disposal of materials out of order.
c. Co-ordination with other organizations related to defence purchase.
d. Co-ordination with Bangladesh mission / offices in abroad for defence purchase related affairs.
e. Assessment of capacity of Manufacturing organizations related to defence purchase.
f. Assist Prime Ministers office and armed forces division in defence purchse policy matters.
Bangladesh National Cadet Core (BNCC)
After independence mainly university officers training corpse (UOTC) and Bangladeh Cadet Corpse (BCC) existed upto 1978. In 1979 all the organizations were unified as Bangladesh National Cadet Corpse (BNCC)
BNCC functions for grooming the students up by military training, so that they can contribute to the society and nation building activities in a better way.
